India is facing new maritime challenges in the Indian ocean. Examine these challenges and explain what should be India’s strategy in addressing these challenges.

New Challenges in the Indian Ocean-
China's presence in the IO , building military naval bases .
China increasing cooperation with strategically important SL ,Maldives , Pakistan .
China -US rivalry for dominance
SOP theory

Significance of Indian Ocean -
If one See the map of South Asia upside down one would understand IO importance.
Oil trade -60% of global trade
SeSea lanes of communication and choke points. like strait of mallaca .

India's strategy to revive the old IOZOP is outdated .
India's strategy to address the IO maritime challenges
1)Build its naval strength , rapidly modernize its navy , develop civilian
maritime infrastructure and island territories .Undertake maritime
operations across littoral states to expand capacity.
2)Deepen bilateral , trilateral and multilateral military security cooperation with US and France in the Indian Ocean.
3)Strengthen naval cooperation with maritime neighbors like SL , Maldives . Increase naval assistance and develop stronger relations with other island
countries like Seychelles and Mauritius.
4)Start maritime dialogue with China on IO.
5)Expand its Multilateral-ism through forums like IO Rim Association and IO Naval Symposium.

The NSA has revived the talk of bringing the Indian ocean zone of peace to the fore again. The last time it was revoked was when india was weak and political environment was beset with cold war. The current situation leaves india hanging between anti china policies on the one hand and cooperation with US and allies on the other. Somehow touching both, india is
reluctant to take the challenge head on.

Past has proved india’s efforts futile when it has tried to defend or bring moralpolitik in the discourse. China’s increased presence and design to encircle india with a ramp up through military presence has proven to be a ominous sign. Delaying the efforts or following past precedents will not help. Instead india should follow the following—

-increased political dialogue with the Indian ocean nations, and not bullying them
-increasing the activity of IORA BIMSEC and Indian ocean naval synopsium as a platform to manage affairs of Indian ocean.
-engaging china in dialogue on maritime security in Indian ocean and beyond
-cooperation with the US japan Australia and france on security of Indian ocean and having military exercises
-enhancing indigenoud military capabilities as well as civilian maritime capabilities
-sealing deals with Russia and US for enhancement in technology
-assissting more vigorously to littoral states and beyond when in distress like in Maldives recently

In the recent decades maritime diplomacy in the Indian ocean occupied the central stage in the south East asian region. Notably this rising apprehensions of the two giant powers India and China is the most dynamic subject of this blue water diplomacy.
Challenges for India in the Indian ocean
1) The most important challenge lies in front of India is to counter China's rise in the region. As in the recent year china shows it's aggressive approach in the Indian ocean. Building naval bases, china's Pearls of string theory and it's ambitious MSR clearly reveled it's maritime ambitions, which where not auspicious for India
2) After china New Delhi also needed to counter the growing interest of USA , Great Britain and France in the region as it has been witnessed in the recent years that these western powers also shows there ardent interest in the region.
3) Here it should to be also the Indian ocean region is also a global trade facilitator route thus the lagging maritime diplomacy of India in this region can also be prove inimical for the nation lager interest.
4) Further more it has been also observe that the other nations of the region are also trying to develop strong bilateral relation with the nation which have strong naval hold in the ocean thus it also posses a bilateral threat for New Delhi as Srilank and Maldives have started titling towards china.
What should to be the India's strategy
To cope up the rising diplomatic crisis in the Indian ocean India first of all try to enhance it's participation in the region. Need of the hour is also to maintain close ties with the other nations of the region and strengthen their bilateral relationship, just like in the way which India recently follows in Maldives. Further New Delhi also need to expand it's naval infrastructure and enhance it's dialogue with and actively participate in the various platforms like Indian-ocean Rim Association. Here it should to be also noted that the many eminent scholars also advocated that the India should look beyond it's conservative opinions just like it's apprehensions over MSR which was deteriorating India's image
So while going for certain well planned and balanced approach nation can easily tackle this maritime diplomacy which proved to be important predicament from the last few decades
